This course is designed to introduce the technique of Passive Acoustic Monitoring (PAM) to Marine Mammal Observers (MMOs), researchers or any other interested parties. This course has recently been redesigned to include an online training component as well as a practical day in a classroom.
The first part of the course, to be completed online, focuses on basic theory of acoustics, marine mammal vocalisations, PAM equipment currently available and the various types of software available for real time monitoring and for subsequent analysis.
This simple introduction is aimed at the beginner and will form a basic understanding in order to proceed with the second practical part of the course which includes a demonstration of typical PAM equipment used offshore, a mock up of how this might be deployed, and a practical session configuring software used to analyse in-coming signals from the hydrophones. PAMGUARD software is the current preferred software for offshore industry projects. There will also be a discussion on troubleshooting problems with PAM equipment and how this may be dealt with offshore.
Due to the technical skills required for passive acoustic monitoring offshore it is usually commonplace for personnel, new to PAM, to be placed alongside an experienced PAM operator during offshore projects for further training. This introductory course will form a good basis for your first steps to becoming a PAM operator.

Course Content

The course contents are as follows:

  • Basic Theory of Acoustics
  • The Principle of Using Spectrograms to Visualise Sound
  • Marine Mammal Vocalisations with Example Spectrogram Videos
  • Other Ocean Noise with Example Spectrogram Videos
  • PAM Equipment Components
  • PAM Assembly and Safe Deployment
  • PAM Equipment Types (examples of existing systems)
  • PAM Software for Real Time Monitoring
  • Practical Session to Configure PAMGUARD Software

PLEASE BE AWARE THAT TO WORK OFFSHORE IN UK WATERS AS A PAM OPERATOR YOU WILL NEED TO HAVE COMPLETED THE JNCC MMO CERTIFICATION

Course Location:

Globe Hotel

Classes will be held in the town of Kings Lynn in Norfolk at the Globe Hotel.

The Globe Hotel is on the corner of Tuesday Market Place in the centre of town.  Address is: The Globe Hotel, King Street, Kings Lynn, Norfolk. PE30 1EZ.

Click  here for Globe Hotel Website

Click here for a map of the Globe Hotel’s location.

Accomodation

Kings Lynn  has several hotels and guest houses. Please note there are no hostels in Kings Lynn.

Please note that the Globe Hotel (which is a common choice of accommodation for our trainees) has a disco in its bar every Friday and Saturday night. If the courses coincide with the need to book accommodation on these nights please do consider if this noise will be unsuitable for you.

Travel

Kings Lynn is on the train line from London Kings Cross Station with a regular hourly service. There is also a good train service from London Stansted Airport (with just one change).

Car Parking

Please note there are no car parking facilities at the Globe Hotel. There are several public car parks in the town within walking distance.

Please click here for a map of car parks in Kings Lynn town centre. The long stay car parks are the cheapest.  For tariffs of these car parks - follow this link to the Kings Lynn's Council Website.

Please note the cost of these vary and that some have restricted times you can stay.  The car park outside the Globe Hotel (number 1 on map) for example is very expensive and has restricted times.

Please factor in enough travel time to find an appropriate car park elsewhere.

A private car park we recommend is shown on the car park map with a red cross. This car park, whose entrance is on Church Street, always has spaces and is reasonably priced for a whole day. Alternatively we suggest the long stay car parks A, D, E or F (see map).
