to Marine Mammal Observers (MMOs), researchers or
any other interested
parties. It also includes an exercise in
configuring the industry standard PAM software -
PAMGUARD.
Simply log
in, read, learn and complete course assessments at your own

information. This is not just a course
but a tool for your continuing
professional development.
The course contents are as follows

The
Principle of Using Spectrograms to
Visualise Sound
Marine
Mammal Vocalisations with Example
Spectrogram Videos
Other

PAM
Software for Real Time Monitoring
Practical Session to Configure
PAMGUARD Software
This introduction is aimed at the
complete beginner and will form a basic
understanding in Passive Acoustic
Monitoring. There is a multiple-choice
assessment in the course and an exercise
configuring the industry standard
software PAMGUARD. On satisfactory
completion a certificate will be issued.
This is a theory course and you work
through the material at your own pace.
You will be required to email us your
PAMGUARD configuration for assessment
before a certificate is issued.
Please note that to work offshore as
a PAM operator additional field
experience operating PAM equipment may
be required. We can help you with advice
to locate suitable projects.
PLEASE BE AWARE
THAT TO WORK OFFSHORE IN UK WATERS AS A
PAM OPERATOR YOU WILL NEED TO HAVE
COMPLETED THE JNCC MMO CERTIFICATION AS
THIS PAM COURSE DOES NOT COVER
MITIGATION.
Example pages from the eLearning
course
* Please
note that persons likely to win contracts
working as MMOs and PAM Operators are those which have
additional biological or environmental
qualifications and/or have experience of
working at sea. To work as an MMO or PAM
Operator in
some areas of the UK where marine
mammals are more abundant you will be
required to have experience of working
with marine mammals whether this is
formally as a researcher, previous
employment or through
voluntary work.
We would expect
that persons wishing to work as MMOs or
PAM Operators to
already have this experience or will
endeavour to do so after this course.
Alternatively you may be personnel from
the offshore industry sector who may
like to complete an eLearning course in order
to gain more knowledge of marine mammal
observation or PAM during offshore operations.
